Irie, our Nu Groove man, and Nik Weston, our Japanese productions specialist, bring us their latest faves B4 we leave. Wishin' U a nice summer,

NU GROOVE (SOUL, JAZZ, BREAKS, DRUM & BASS + MORE…)
Looks like every issue's starting the same way as Parisian people keep on making waves. One of the best examples being Nicolas Chaix aka I:Cube, associated this time with RZA of the Wu Tang Clan camp with a nu track to be released on Versatile. Also on the dark side of the hip hop scene, let's point out some magnificient work from the Jazz Liberators on Kif Records, a local label that obviously likes to stay aside from the hype although purveying us with top quality material, should it be house, funk or breakbeat. The Jazzlibs who are also planning to pay their tribute to the legendary Minnie Riperton, under the form of "Miss Davies" with the vocal help of Janice ; a track to be released later this year on Shade Of Soul's Sunny Side label. Another local talent about to smash the dance floors worldwide goes by the name of L’Aroye, a man who has raised many eyebrows recently. Especially the agitated American broken techno freak, Titonton Duvante. The later one who will remix his dangerous "Earthquake" and put it soon on his own imprint label, Residual Records (based in his hometown, Colombus, Ohio). Titonton who goes full circle from Detroit to Paris…as his red hot "Raunchy EP" is finally out on what has to be considered as the very best french techno output right now, Project Records.

Fresh from Detroit, the shocking trio entitled Three Chairs plays the game of musical chairs. The wild bunch that is Three Chairs (on the label going by the same name, whom -after a superb 12’- let us hope for a monumental LP). Moodyman, Rick White and Theo Parrish who welcome a new member, Marcellus Pittman.

Yam who ? Yam Who ! Another enigmatic hero of future soul internationally, Yam Who is definitely on everyone’s lips. Because most of those who admire him ignore who he is, his art speaks for himself… his famous edits, so hypnotic between dub and gospel, transcend the original cuts of the biggest American R&B stars. After his spiritual take on "Sky’s The Limit" by Raphael Saadiq (produced by Hi Tek), now is the time for Litlle Brother, Common, Dwele or better yet The Roots’s (collaborating with Musiq Soulchild) "Break You Off", to be re-dressed in the finest way. And we can’t wait to hear what Yam Who reserves us in the future.

Even though I may hurt a few die hard fans, can't help pointing how the vast majority of jungle production seems desperately dry these days. In fact, rare are those who still make us vibe, unlikethe soulful man from the Empire of the Rising Sun, Makoto (with a new album out via Good Looking) Calibre, Marcus Da Intalex and all the new wave signed by 4 Hero-on Reinforced-such as Breakage or Sonar Circle. The latter much more known for his broken beat, house, techno and hip hop sounds under his Domu moniker (also as Rima or Zoltar with Volcov) who releases a new exceptional EP on junglistic fields. Not forgetting Paradox who succeeds where most failed while accomplishing the task of remixing a classic of drum and bass history without ruining it. Not overtaking it either. The piece in question, a seminal tune "Horizon" by the magician LTJ Bukem (Good Looking). Only wish we were able to say the same about numerous remixes of Metalheadz catalogue. As Alex Reece's "Pulp Fiction" being massacred on a hardstep style by Lemon D and even Lemon D's "Urban Style Of Music" being vulgarised by the disappointing Hidden Agenda. Metalheadz, label of the emperor Goldikus who should start scratching his head if he still hopes to save his crown as the king of the jungle ! IRIE

JAPAN CORNER BY NIK WESTON
Japan has just spent the last two months in sweltering heat. The first was dry & hot but the later was hot & wet as the 30 or so days of humid ''rainy season'' meaning torrential rain across the country and umbrella's were out in full force. On the live & DJ front recent vistors to Tokyo have included Luke Soloman (Classic), James Hardway (Hydrogen Dukebox), Paul Oakenfold and from America, Basement Boys, Lord G, Ananda Project and Jerome Sydenham (Ibadan), not mentionning these times' crazy frenchman, Franck Roger… Glenn Underground was over on a national Tour and Ayro (from Detroit)comes over at the end of July to do a live set at Club Dawn in Osaka. Roy Davis Jr is set to do a live set at Yellow and guests for August doing nationwide gigs include Shelter man, Timmy Regisford, Mateo & Matos and London's finest, Ashley, Rocky & Diesel as X-Press 2. + With a new U.N.K.L.E album ("Never Never Land"), James Lavelle & Ian Brown are ro do a live & DJ set.

The Fuji Festival will take place at the end of the month at the Naeba Ski Resort in Nigata down to the base of the majestic landmark, Mount Fuji. An event that goes from strength to strength. This year's 3 day event features amongst others Underworld, Bj? Massive Attack, Lemon Jelly,Talib Kweli, Death In Vegas, Goldfrapp, R?opp, Tim Deluxe, Pole and Dirty Vegas.

Brighton based label, Disorient have a flurry of japanese artists projects on their UK label in the next month or so … Apart from the "Silver Ocean" album from Yasushi Ide which has former Ten City vocalist, Byron Stingily, legendary sax player Pharoah Saunders and USA girl rapper, Apani B ,there are also 2 singles from Monday Michiru. One with a dope twisted broken beat mix from West London's IG Culture and the other that is an unreleased mix from Brixton's finest, Basement Jaxx. These all precede their forthcoming Japanese compilation,
Dois.

Mondo Grosso (Shinichi Osawa) has recently released his follow up to the highly regarded MG4 album with ''Next Wave'' on Sony. Shinichi told me : "'it's a very different direction for me. People will be very surprised !" Not half mate ! Gone are any connetations to jazz in any shape or form & in its place are collaborations with Harry Romero, Armand Van Helden and Towa Tei making for a truely progessive house orientated sound. Mondo Grosso take on a national tour in August to promote the album. Ohio rapper/producer Fat Jon who recently has been on world tour with Pole (where he is a guest MC) has just licenced his Japanese only "Lightweight Heavy" album to Exceptional Records in the UK.Other new releases worth hunting down include a dope full player just dropped from an underground heavyweight & producer, Mitsu, who's part of the Sendai hip hop collective, Gagle. His '"Mitsu The Beats" album containing collaborations with american friends Dwele, Rich Medina and Little Brother as well as Lady Alma and Mark De Clive-Lowe.The Dwele track 'Right Here' in particular has been picking up substantial club & radio play from Phil Asher & Kiss FM's Patrick Forge.

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE 19

The 2003 Sunslice edition is now definitely behind us, leaving local fans in Toulon with that kind of feeling that only orphans feel in their minds. In other words, time always fly too quickly when speakin' about da goods thangz in life. This second edition of what seems like the only (deep) house festival in the world gave us without a single doubt another good amount of enlightening sensations. The first of it being the real brotherhood existing between the various actors that gave its substance to the event, most of them showing a real pleasure to have the opportunity of being together once more and collaborate with each other. This, at the end of the day, being nothing else than the true spirit of soul.

If any event symbolizes this famous motto according to what house music is a nation, its undoubtly Sunslice, those who gave birth to it and those who've made it the way it is. A rendez-vous of people who've known each other for quite a while and appreciate each other, not only artistically speaking, but also because of their respective personalities wherever they're coming from, should it be US, France or Cuba, with the obvious aim of giving pleasure to the crowd. Well, you've guessed it, Sunslice is more of a new festival, it's a spirit of a what stands as a real family, the essence of soul… They did it last year with a memorable impromptu live gathering three DJ's (Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer + your ace), three cuban percusssionists and a sax player, and they've redone it this year, starring almost the same line up (Kerri, Dennis and DJ Deep) and three cuban musicians including a keyboardist, a flutist and a percussionist) with the same effect, proving that soul has definitely no colour. A true spirit of share that was almost the same regarding the other guests (myself, JoVonn, and DJ Titou, a relatively new name definetely to follow. Not mentionning the numerous face 2 faces behind the desks for the after parties at Le Bar ?Thym, while, as an extra, Sunslice entered the history of house while greeting Blaze for the first time ever in Europe !

This second edition of Sunslice is now over, leavin' already space in the heads of the promoters for numerous questions regarding the future. The first of'em being its line up for 2004. Will the line up have to be totally renewed as some people say in order to create the surprise ? Or should it be kept in its main lines in order to have the assurance of maintaining that family spirit unique in its genre, this providing gigs that easily stand the comparizon with the Masters At Work parties in Miami ? Unless it's going to be a bit of everything ? Keep you posted as time goes on.

Long time we haven't spoken only about da french scene and there's reaaly a lot to say about it as quality is definitely there. Remember Shade Of Soul's with its remix of "Give It To Me" by 4Hero, touted as one of the most brilliant post production from the london pair ? Well, this was probably not enuff for enthusiasming the company that was supposed to distribute it there as they refused it. Don't ask me why but if so I would tell you that the aforementioned company is probably more into that electro clash sound that has polluted our dancefloors for a while… Things look far better for Franck Roger who happens to be the partner of one member of Shade Of Soul (under the name of Sun Orchestra )… Well, our Franck who has a whole bunch of new productions awaited after the holidays season, has a serious killer entitled "Liquid" on BRS that should rock da floors interested in Ron Trent and Needs productions. Need I say more ? For those who've missed something from Playin'4 The City, Straight Up label releases a 12" collection on a CD format, including some of the best tracks ever released by Olivier Portal's outfit. And Tropism releases the remix EP of "Backshop"", including Franck Roger and Llorca's contributions with a little preference for the latest.

Remember this word we had about Rotax label head of, Pascal Rioux, back from Miami ? Well the now parisian guy who's got a wonderful remix of "Golden Days" by King Britt on his shelves and a new album on the pipeline has decided to modify most of its content for an autumn release. Watch this space in september as he's going 2 B back in action with three 12" releases… This, leading us to Lyon, his former hometown, with a lot of nu stuff on offer. Another guy we've talked about at the time is L'Ambassade's resident DJ, Manoo who scored a nice debut with Allen on Basenotic three months ago (cf. "The Good Reason"). Well, da man is also involved as one third of Rodamaal, a french/portuguese production team who's made the buzz on Ben Watt's label, Buzzin'Fly with "Musica Feliz" and a featuring of singer, Nicinha. Meanwhile, Klement Bonelli & Rochdee who've signed on Basement Boys britsih based label, Elephunk, provide us the melancholic "Nocturne" over some calypso beats, makin' a nice combination. Also to be followed from the same city is Bruno Hovarts aka Patchworks. A guy that not only has a nu jazz LP, MJA, under the name of Metropolitan Jazz Affair, but also various productions on different labels. One of the best ones being "Sugar" with an Amp Fiddler remix on chicagoan label, Still Music.

We'll end up this issue the way we've opened it, going back to Toulon, With Sunslice's A&R, DJ Bool and his outfit, Jerk House Connection who's new 12, "Each & Every Day" featuring vocalist Akran is soon to be available on official release (Saarinen Records), prior to "New York Stylee" with an awesome remix of the Offsetters. These two guys havin' two productions soon to be released on JoVonn's label and Claude Monnet's one. Not 2 bad, isn't it ? Get back 2 U next week with with both Irie's Nu Groove column and Nik Weston's latest selection from the japanese scene.
Peace, MFSB

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE 18

Couldn't start this issue without expressing my deepest sadness after Barry White's departure to what can't be nothing else than Soul Heaven. I came to know him personaly at the beginning of the 90's while havin' an intezrview for a mag that I was writing for at this period and I'll never forget the Impression while seing the door leading to his room getting opened to me. He was there sitting in a deep sofa, just the way I 've imagined he was, wearing a black satin costume and welcomed me with this unique Voice. It was hard for me to hide my emotions, meeting what to me had been a hero since I was a teenager. I guess this is something that he understood at the very first minute and opened his heart instantly. Words'll never be enough for me to express how I felt at the time, but I'll never forget this precise moment, as most of us here will never do, regarding a part or another of what he has left us with his work. Barry was in his unique way the icon, and the icon was Barry. "Let the music play…"

ISSUE18
Dis time, disizit, as Sunslice festival in Toulon is the spot where all the deep house fans will have 2 B during what stands as the french independance day W.E. from 07/10 til 07/14. Any surprise to happen as last year's closing nite under the form of that impromptu block party that gathered Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer and yours trully behind the desks + a Playin' 4 The City saxophonist and an array of cuban percusionnists ? Dis, you're gonna know within a week with the next mailing of In Da Mix.

Not necessary evident 2 have a clear view about what's not 2 B missed from a week 2 another as, not only because of the amount but also and foremost the quality seems to be definitely back dis year. And there's obviously a bit of everything 4 everyone as demonstrates this week's column. Surely good 4 our ears although that might B anotha story 4 our finances…

Next summer (2004) sees the celebration of the 200th birthday of Haiti's Independance. Meanwhile, Jephte Guillaume, one of its most brilliant ambassador gives us the insane "The Kid From Okap", an atmospheric vibrant midtempo directing a jazzy flute riff around a phat bassline and a central question : "Pouki ?" ("Pourquoi ?") do we suffer so ? (Spiritual Life). Not to be missed is the fourth release of DC label, Sancsoul an EP entitled "" which sees the collaborations between Brett Dancer & SoulMecca featuring Thi-Lai, althought the best cut being "Keep It Together", a sort of afro blues song by Curtis Lee featuring Okbar. Also from Washington are 95 North, a pair of people that, like Larry Heard, thought one time about quiting their jobs in the circuit. Would have been a shame as demonstrates their moody "Chasing My Dreams" featuring the vocal talents of Marie Tweek from The Rurals. A compact soulful choon although embellished with some ambient synth line and a look like Ibanez guitar part. The other choice of this 3 tracks EP being their Guitar Dub Mix on some kind of West Indies rhythm line as championed by DJ Gregory (Large). On the same label is Roy Davies Jr's nu single. A nearly brazilian smoothie on some silky vocals by newcomer Samantha Rose after a percussive start that sounds a bit like a reminder of the classic "Jacob's Ladder" from Incognito after its memorable treatment by MAW ! Also worth to check out is the aerial Chicago Dub on da flip !

In search for some bossa ? Get a listen to the easy going "When The Rain Begins To Fall" that sees italian outfit LTJ-Experience joining forces with Salsoul veteran Joe Bataan (Irma). Meanwhile dAN Mela & Louie B, aka Streetvibes, deliver us the afro caribbean "Summer At Suda" (Streetvibes). Chari Chari givin' its money back to Frankie Valentine while revamping in a very moody way its afro rocky "Moog Rock" as originally released last year on Sunshine Entreprises. This added to a softer version of "Frankie In Vienna" by the man himself and a strange rework of "O'Chant" by electro anarchist Patrick Pulsinger.

On a more classic 4X4 format is the return of Distant Music maestro Jon Cutler with the groovy and classy "Focus" sung by brit soul songstress Vanessa Freeman, a future and obvious timeless classic. Mind ya headz and ya buddies, as JoVonn will not only opens the Sunslice fes in Toulon but has also some dope new versions of the deep N soulful "Don't Waste Your Time" on Track Mode. Something to get you in the right mood and more particularly the Zanz Classic Mix on the B-side. Right for the summer is the hot "Luv Me Rite" by Todd Gardner featuring Kimara Lovelace cleverly based on a sample of George Duke's classic "A Brazilian Love Affair" (Distance). Could this be the return of some true funk vibez ? A beginning of answer is heavily given by Jestofunk on "Disco Queen". For da rest, that's another story that needs to be written (Irma), although the infamous reedits of Black Science Orchestra's "New Jersey Deep" in its original version and by Swag tend to be a good element of response (Junior Boys Own). Meanwhile, former BSO guy Ashley Beedle turns Mr Scruff's "Sweet Smoke"into some shiny jazz funk story (Ninja Tune). On a harder (electronic) tip is The Amalgamation Of Soundz's newie. A vibrant song called "To Find A Quiet Space" that, together with the two others kutz on the B-side, shows us what this british talented pair is really made of (Atcha Recordings).
Peace,
MFSB

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE 17

Say kids, wot time izit ? It's time 4 house ! Countdown is definitely on as this Independance Day W.E. in NYC sees some serious things happening. First is Harmony this friday, a benefit community event brought by srs Lee & Marcus dis Friday nite in order to collect funds for the airing of Jennifer Hooper's Liquid Sound Lounge on WBAI, one of the (too) rare house radio shows in the Big Apple. Enlisted are 10 DJ's including Andrea Clarke-Sister from Another Planet, Clete, Adam Warped-El Gato Musica, Shan-Cloud Kickers, Brazilian Beat-Black Betty, Kotema Noble-Kassanova Lowlite and Siren-House of Siren. Not talking about a three hours DJ set by our sis, Jeaanie + a special live performance by Tortured Soul. This, happening at Art Land Bar, 609 Grand Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (more infos : 001 718 599.9706. www.liquidsoundlounge.com). The ideal thang to get you in the right mood as funk/soul diva Chaka Khan is to rock da floor on saturday for a PA at Summer Stage in Central Park, prior to a marathon DJ concentration at Clubshelter, starting from 07:00 PM til 05:00 PM the day after, with contributions from 'Little' Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Danny Krivit, Phil Asher, DJ Spinna, Frankie Feliciano, Jazzy Jeff and Glenn Underground around resident Timmy Regisford (more infos : (001) 212-719-4479. www.clubshelter.com)

Meanwhile the following Thursday will be the starting point of Sunslice festival in Toulon (France) with la creme de la creme of the deep house scene featuring Blaze, Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer, Jerome Sydenham, JoVonn, DJ Deep, Pascal 'Rotax' Rioux, DJ Bool and Jerk House Connection, The Offsetters, Kardek, Hanna Hais and many others + yours trully (more infos : www.sunslice-festival.com). And for those who're gonna miss this and more particularly Blaze, the Cheers team in Paris has managed to offer us an extra session with the two guys, not on Friday at La Coupole as usual, but on Sunday 07/13 starting from 08:30 PM wit' a BBQ party at la terrasse du Jardin d'Acclimatation, avenue Mahatma Gandhi, metro/subway Sablon, line/ligne 1 (more infos : www.cheersparis.com).

Please note that IDM will go on a lighter rhythm as the summer goes along, due to some DJ sessions of your very devoted here and there, some studio seesions for the recording of my next CD-Mix awaited somewhen during the autumn on London label Seamless Recordings and, last but not least, some summer break. As concerning In Da Mix network, a new member joins the family - www.deephousemafia.org - spreading the good words to Vienna, Austria. Welcome on board. But for now, time 2 go back 2 the fundament of dis rendez-vous with a new selection of some of the hottest audio vibes around…

Boys, boys, boys… Or shall I say Blaze, Blaze, Blaze, almost everywhere at the same time with a solid collection of relifted wax of their own, not mentioning their latest production - "We Are One" - on King Street ! Get on one hand broken beat keyboardist, Kaidi Tatham aka Agent K, on the other, brit songstress Carleen Anderson and on the third, either DJ Spinna on the B-side or Blaze on the A-one, well no need to wait anymore as you get one of the most soulful piece of plastic of this year 2K3. A pure jewel originally released of Laws Of Motion that receives a new life after being licensed on Giant Step with the indeniable know how that is their !And the same oughta B said about Reel People featuring Jag's newie entitled "Second Guess", another true soul gem from Papa Records, a UK label fast making a name amongst the purveyors of quality. Slightly more dancefloorish is the 'Blaze Vocal Soul Mix' of "So Close" from Electroacoustic, a british trio that sees bassist Nick Seymour and vocalist Aurora Dawn around former Brand New Heavies lead guitarist, Simon Bartholomew (Outer Recordings). All of this following the footsteps of their rework of the recent DJ Jorj's "Only You" and its sunny jazzy mood (Distant Music). Not too bad indeed, like Shelter Records' last dope - "Agua" from Javermeyer featuring brazilian vocalist Naughty Miranda - and its Extended Version edited by Timmy Regisford givin'it some subtle arrangements.

Swedish (nu)jazz fan, Marchus Enochson gives us another slice of beauty with the 12" release of the aptly named "Feeling Fine" on MAW that sounds like a contemporary equivalent to the late Chet Baker's works due to its absolute purity (check out the 'Suedo Jazz Mix' on da B-side). As aerial although more beat tapped is Needs' latest "Dark World". A concept somewhere between Ron Trent's works and the memorable Life On Earth leadin'us into this kind of spatial groove that makes their trademark with some vocal parts not too far away from the Pet Shop Boys' tones ! Feels like this will shortly be an anthem (Needs Music).

Nice to see the return of former Ten City front man, Byron Stingily with the magnificient "Sweet Dream" associated to Yasushi Ide under the name of Lonesome Echo Productions. A real soul classic enlighted with old school violins line + latin percussions and if this was not enuff, this marvel is coupled with a deep'n'crispy contribution from Osunlade on the B-side called "Soul Galactic" (Disrorient). Don't really know when Ben Mitchell is sleeping as it almost seems that he has something on offer every week. This time, Dewburry's partner reforms with Cosmo and Gav (from Disorient), delivering us the soulful "Upstream" under their Tidal moniker, featuring the vocal talents of Jennifer. For sure, these people have a proper idea of what's supposed to be good muzak ; not talking about some x-tra broken beat delicatessen as delivered by Lok8 who's none other than Orin Walters (Disorient).

Loads of good things to come out of Italy these days, as shown by Fuzz Against Junk's latest. A big band jazz tune that reminds some previous works from Joe Claussell, Antonio Ocasio and erh… Ben Mitchell ! Needless to say that this corker is for absolute music lovers. This added to a Nicola Conte mix on da flipside. Ma che bellissimo (Location Recordings). In love with this kinda vibez? Well, check out the "Not Alone" track by Sure Pleasure and more especially its "Sure Pleasure Dub" mix as it feels like deeeep heaven boomer (Irma). Ending up dis issue 17 with another mediterranean maestria under the form of the vibrant "Musica Feliz" from Rodamaal, a french portuguese production team with the vocal support of Nicinha, smelling holidays like hell (Buzzin' Fly).
Welcome to a promising new summer,
Peace,
MFSB
