A while back we promised to bring the gallery and the blog back to the site. Please accept our apologies, but due to various reasons it takes more time than planned.

On another note, we decided to focus on the vocal/soulful stuff on the weekly updates (just the way we've done it for years). But no worries, we will continue to feature the deeper, trackier and sometimes techy stuff as well. In fact expect another such update in the next few days...

And for those wondering if we ever reject music submissions: yes we do, and to be honest quite a lot of recent submissions did not pass our quality check...

We are proud to announce that our Mix Archive site has been upgraded to the latest version of Joomla! as well this past week.

We are delighted to inform you that we successfully migrated to the latest version of Joomla! . Even though we've tested things before, there might still be some glitches here and there... in case you find one, please repor them to us by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., thanks a lot.

We hope you like the new layout. At first, it might look a bit small, but this ensures it looks good on smaller screens (such as those 10" 1024x600 ones used in the so popular Netbooks).

Next we will bring the galleries with the pictures from the Winter Music Conferences back. Unfortunately, we have no exact date yet when the blog and links sections will be back. Please accept our apologies.

Currently the plans are for the upgrade to be done tomorrow Thursday, May 21. During the update, the site will not be available. We will try to keep the downtime as short as posssible.

We would like to inform you that Spirit of House will be undergroing maintenance soon as we plan to update Joomla! (the content management system used on the site) to the current version. We also plan to bring a fresh look to the site at the same time.

Unfortunately, this will have a temporary impact on some of the features of the site:

  • the "Gallery": we will replace the gallery system with a new one - we believe this is the right way to go for the future.
  • the "Blog": the current blog system won't work under the new Joomla!, so we are evaluating options to replace it with something else.
  • "Weblinks": we are currently using a replacement for the standard Joomla! links module which won't work neither. Evaluation of altnerate solutions is underway.

The main features - reviews, mixes, charts - are not affected by this maintenance.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Defected will host an exclusive party at this years Winter Music Conference in Miami. The international line-up includes Kenny Dope, ATFC, Simon Dunmore, DJ Spen, Yass, David Penn, Studio Apartment, Baggi Begovic, DJ Tekin and Marc Evans.

The party will be held at Set, the glamorous venue designed with Hollywood's retro film star lifestyle as its inspiration. It is the favourite venue for pop stars, film stars and celebrities to party and now it is set to host a party for the elite of the world's dance scene.

Dan Baxter, Defected's brand director further explains: "This date also kicks off our brand new Set residency and sets the tone for our full Defected In the House US Spring tour. Indeed, Miami WMC is the gateway for everything we do in North and Latin America".

Location: Set, South Beach, Miami
Date: Tuesday 24th March, 10pm - 5am

"Spirit of House"

During the holidays, I made up my mind about the future of Spirit of House. I've been doing it for way over a decade now, and to be honest, I'm burned out to some degree. But on the other hand I do love music from the bottom of my heart, so I just can't give it up...

So I was thinking how can I keep it going while making sure it does not eat up all of my free time (remember that I work a full time job) and burns me out even more. Changes were inevitable, but I tried to keep them as small as possible - here is the list:

  • The fundament will be weekly updates (usually late Saturday) as you are used from the past
  • These weekly updates will include mixes and reviews
  • Selected releases only (the "Picks") will get individual reviews, the rest will be reviewed in one block (similar to the "Short Reviews" I've done past year)
  • More "Spotlight" reviews are planned to give special exposure to new/rising talent our outstanding products
  • No more "Short Reviews" as they are now part of the regular reviews

Please check our blog for some insight why the decision was made not to attend the WMC next year.

What can DJs for Obama do? Host parties and events in the biggest or best places that you can for your fans and supporters. Definitely have a party election night and monitor the election returns as they come in.

As many of our elders can recall where they were when JFK was elected, we too will all want to remember this historic night! Ask your people to show up in Obama gear, even if they have to make it for themselves with crayons or lipstick.

Create mixes and release them for free encouraging your fans to vote. Invite your local media too!

We need all kinds of support for this moment in our history.
